Returning to God with a Whole Heart | God Looks at the Heart
Have you ever gone through the motions spiritually, doing the right things on the outside, but feeling disconnected on the inside? In Joel 2:13, God speaks directly to this: “Rend your hearts and not your garments.” In biblical times, people would tear their clothes as a sign of sorrow or repentance. But God makes it clear that He is not looking for outward displays alone; He desires something deeper. He wants our hearts.
What True Repentance Looks Like
Returning to God with a whole heart has to be genuine and authentic. In the verse, to “rend your heart” means to come before God with sincerity, humility, and honesty. It’s not about appearances; it’s about transformation. True repentance is not just saying the right words; it’s allowing God to change our thoughts, attitudes, and desires. It’s turning away from sin and turning fully toward Him.
Sometimes it’s easy to look like we have it all together, especially in our homes or at church. But God isn’t impressed by perfection; He is drawn to authenticity. When we come to Him with a genuine heart, He meets us with grace.
The Character of God
Joel 2:13 reminds us why we can return to God with confidence: “for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.” This is who God is. He is not waiting to condemn us; He is ready to receive us. His love is steady, His mercy is abundant, and His grace is always available.
When we understand God’s character, it changes how we approach Him. We don’t have to hide. We don’t have to pretend. We can come to Him just as we are, knowing He will respond with compassion.
Joel 2:13
and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
Turning Our Hearts Daily
Returning to God is not just a one-time moment; it’s a daily decision. Each day, we choose to align our hearts with Him. In our families, this can look like taking time to pray, talk about God’s Word, and encourage one another to seek Him sincerely.
When our hearts are right, our actions will follow. But when we focus only on actions without the heart, we miss what God truly desires.
Living from Grace to Grace
God doesn’t just forgive us once; He continually meets us with grace. Every time we turn back to Him, we are reminded that His love never runs out. He restores, renews, and strengthens us again and again.
Prayer
Lord, we recognize that You care for us. You care for our health. You care for our hearts. You care for our family. Help us to fully repent when we have done wrong. Help us to fully seek You in times when we don’t know what to do. May we always know that You will meet us with Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
