The Lord Is Our Shepherd

A God Who Leads and Cares for Us

Life can sometimes feel uncertain. There are seasons when we wonder what comes next, how things will work out, or whether we have what we need for the road ahead. In those moments, God gives us a beautiful picture of who He is through Psalm 23.

Psalm 23:1 says:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

These few words hold incredible comfort. God does not describe Himself as a distant ruler or an uninvolved observer. He describes Himself as a Shepherd—someone who leads, protects, provides for, and cares deeply for His people.

What Does a Shepherd Do?

A shepherd watches over sheep with constant care. He guides them toward good places, protects them from danger, and helps them when they wander. Sheep depend on their shepherd because they cannot safely navigate life on their own.

In the same way, we need God.

We often try to lead ourselves through life. We make plans, search for answers, and sometimes rely only on our own understanding. But God lovingly reminds us that we were never meant to carry everything alone.

He leads us when we are unsure. He protects us when we feel afraid. He provides for us when we have needs. He restores us when we grow weary.

The Shepherd Provides What We Need

David says, “I shall not want.” This does not mean life will always give us everything we desire, but it does mean that our Shepherd knows exactly what we need.

Think back over your family’s life. There have likely been moments when God provided strength when you felt weak, peace when you felt overwhelmed, comfort when you felt discouraged, or provision when you did not know what would happen next. God has always been caring for His people. Sometimes His provision looks different than what we expected, but His faithfulness never changes.

Following the Shepherd Together

Following God is not simply about believing in Him; it is learning to trust His leadership every day.

As a family, take time this week to talk about how God has guided and cared for you. Let worship remind you that your Shepherd is still leading you today.
