Growing the Fruit of the Spirit

A Life That Reflects Jesus

When people think about following Jesus, they often focus on what Christians should do. While our actions matter, God is also deeply concerned with who we are becoming. He desires to transform our hearts so that our lives reflect His character.

Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a beautiful picture of what a Spirit-filled life looks like:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

These qualities are not produced by human effort alone. They are the result of the Holy Spirit working within us day by day.

The Fruit God Wants to Grow

Imagine walking through an orchard filled with healthy trees. You expect to find fruit growing naturally on the branches. In the same way, when we stay connected to God, spiritual fruit begins to grow in our lives.

  • Love helps us care for others.

  • Joy gives us strength even during difficult seasons.

  • Peace steadies our hearts when life feels overwhelming.

  • Patience helps us wait well.

  • Kindness and goodness shape how we treat others.

  • Faithfulness helps us remain committed to God.

  • Gentleness influences how we respond to people.

  • Self-control helps us honor God with our choices.

These qualities don't appear overnight. They grow as we walk closely with Jesus.

Growing Together as a Family

Every family has opportunities to grow in the fruit of the Spirit. Maybe your family needs more patience during busy days. Maybe kindness needs to be shown more often in conversations. Perhaps self-control is needed when emotions run high.

The good news is that God does not expect us to grow on our own. The Holy Spirit helps us become more like Jesus every day.

Instead of becoming discouraged by areas where we struggle, we can invite God into those places and ask Him to help us grow.

Depending on the Holy Spirit

One of the greatest lessons we can learn is that spiritual growth is not about trying harder; it's about depending more fully on God.

As we spend time in prayer, read His Word, and worship Him, the Holy Spirit shapes our hearts. Over time, people begin to see more of Jesus in the way we live, speak, and love.

As a family this week, ask God to help each member grow in the fruit of the Spirit and become more like Christ.

Family Conversation Starters

Use these questions throughout the week to encourage meaningful family conversations:

  • Which fruit of the Spirit stands out to you most?

  • Why do you think God wants these qualities in our lives?

  • Which fruit of the Spirit is easiest for you?

  • Which fruit of the Spirit is hardest for you?

  • How can we show more kindness at home this week?

  • What does self-control look like in everyday life?

  • How can we rely on the Holy Spirit to help us grow?

Worship This Week

Listen to "How Awesome" by Hope Darst and The Belonging Co as a family this week. Let it remind you of God's greatness and His desire to transform us from the inside out.

Prayer

Lord, may our lives show the fruit of the Spirit. Help us to be aware of our mistakes and to invite You into those areas of our lives where we need Your correction, help, and guidance. Give us the wisdom to live as You have called us to live. In Jesus' name, Amen.
