Choosing to Follow God

Every day we make choices. Some decisions are small, like what we will eat or wear. Others have a much greater impact on our lives and families. The most important decision we can make is who we will follow and serve.

Joshua challenged the people of Israel with these powerful words:

"And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)

Joshua understood that faith is not something we drift into accidentally. Following God requires intentional commitment. He boldly declared that regardless of what others chose, his family would belong to the Lord.

A Decision That Shapes a Family

Joshua's statement was more than a personal declaration. It was a family commitment.

Every home is being shaped by something. Some families are shaped by success, sports, entertainment, schedules, or possessions. While none of those things are necessarily bad, they can never take the place of God.

A strong family foundation is built when everyone understands that God comes first. When Christ is at the center of the home, decisions are guided by His Word, relationships are strengthened by His love, and difficult seasons are faced with His help.

Serving the Lord is not just something we do on Sundays. It is a daily choice to honor Him with our attitudes, actions, priorities, and relationships.

Guarding What Matters Most

One reason Joshua called the people to choose was because distractions were everywhere. The same is true today.

Many things compete for our attention and affection. Busy schedules, endless entertainment, and the pressures of life can slowly pull our focus away from God if we are not careful.

Families that thrive spiritually make intentional decisions to keep God first. They pray together, worship together, read Scripture together, and encourage one another in their faith.

No family does this perfectly, but every family can make the decision to continually return to God and follow His leadership.

Serving the Lord Together

One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is an example of faithful devotion to God. Children may not remember every lesson they hear, but they will remember seeing faith lived out consistently at home.

This week, take time as a family to talk about what it means to serve the Lord and how you can grow closer to Him together.
