Hosanna: From a Cry for Help to a Shout of Salvation

What Does “Hosanna” Mean?

The word Hosanna is rich with meaning and history. Our English word comes from the Greek “hosanna,” which comes from the Hebrew phrase hoshiya na. This phrase appears in Psalm 118:25 and originally meant, “Save, please!” It was a desperate cry for help, a plea for rescue.

Imagine someone slipping off a cliff, barely holding on, crying out for someone to save them. That is the heart behind hoshiya na. It is the cry of someone who knows they cannot save themselves.

A Shift from Desperation to Celebration

Over time, something beautiful happened to this word. In Psalm 118, the cry for help is immediately followed by praise: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” The rescue is so certain, so near, that the cry begins to transform.

What once meant “Save, please!” began to take on a new meaning:“Salvation has come!”“Help has arrived!”“Victory is here!”

By the time of Jesus, Hosanna was no longer just a cry for help, it had become a shout of hope, joy, and celebration.

Hosanna to the Son of David

In Matthew 21:9, we see this word come alive as Jesus enters Jerusalem:“The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’”

The people recognized something powerful. By calling Jesus the “Son of David,” they were declaring Him to be the promised King. Their cry of Hosanna was no longer just asking for salvation, it was, proclaiming that salvation had arrived in Jesus.

“Hosanna to the Son of David” means:“The King is our salvation!”“Rescue has come through Him!” And “Hosanna in the highest” is an invitation for all of heaven to join the celebration.

Welcoming Jesus into Our Lives

Just like the crowds, we are invited to respond to Jesus with both faith and praise. There are moments when we cry out to God for help, and there are moments when we celebrate that He has already answered.

In our homes and families, Hosanna can be both:A cry when we need GodA declaration that Jesus is our Savior When we worship, we are reminding our hearts that we are not alone—our rescue has already come in Christ.

Living with a Heart of Praise

The message of Hosanna calls us to live with gratitude and expectation. Jesus is not distant, He is present. He is not uncertain, He is our salvation.

As a family, take time to talk about what Jesus has done, to celebrate His goodness, and to lift your voices in praise. Worship shifts the atmosphere of our hearts and homes.
