More Than a Quick Visit

Think about the difference between a guest and a family member.

A guest comes over for an evening. They stay in the front room, they are careful not to touch anything, and they leave before the house settles into its normal rhythm. A family member lives there. They know where the dishes go. They shape the atmosphere of the home. Their presence affects everything.

Many of us treat Scripture like a guest. We invite it in on Sunday morning, keep the visit brief, and go back to life as usual.

Colossians 3:16 calls us to something far better:

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."

Paul does not tell us to visit God's Word occasionally. He tells us to let it move in.

What It Means to Dwell

To dwell somewhere is to live there permanently.

When God's Word dwells in us, it stops being something we do and starts being something that shapes us. It informs how we respond when we are frustrated. It comes to mind when we face a decision. It speaks to us at two in the morning when worry wakes us up.

That kind of familiarity does not happen accidentally. It comes from returning to Scripture again and again, in small and ordinary ways, until it becomes part of how we think.

Read it at breakfast. Talk about it in the car. Put a verse on the refrigerator. Pray it over your children at bedtime. None of that is dramatic. All of it is formative.

Richly, Not Sparingly

Paul chose the word "richly" on purpose.

He could have said adequately. He could have said sufficiently. Instead he used a word that suggests abundance, generosity, and depth. A little bit of Scripture will carry you through a calm week. A rich store of God's Word will hold you through a hard one. When difficulty comes, and it will, your family will lean on whatever you have already put in. This is why we build now. Not out of obligation, and not to check a box, but so that when the storm arrives, your household has something solid underneath it.

Teaching and Encouraging One Another

Notice that this verse is not only about personal devotion. Paul immediately moves to what we do with one another. You do not need a seminary degree to teach your family. You need a willingness to share what God is showing you. Tell your children what you read this morning. Ask your spouse what stood out to them. Let your kids ask hard questions without being shut down. Speak truth to one another gently when it is needed, because encouragement sometimes means saying the thing that is difficult to hear. Your home is a discipleship environment whether you intend it to be or not. The question is simply what is being taught there.

Why Singing Belongs Here

It might seem unusual that a verse about God's Word suddenly mentions psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. But think about how much easier it is to remember a song than a paragraph. Music carries truth into places that information alone cannot reach. Long after your children forget a lesson, they will remember what your family sang together.

Worship is one of the ways God's Word takes up residence in us.

And Paul adds one more thing: thankfulness. Gratitude is what happens when the Word truly dwells in a heart. The more clearly we see who God is and what He has done, the more naturally worship rises.

Let Christ be magnified in your home this week. Let His Word fill your conversations, your car rides, your music, and your prayers. A home saturated in Scripture becomes a home where faith grows.

Family Conversation Starters

Use one of these questions each day to help spark a family conversation:

  1. What does it mean to let God's Word "dwell" in you?

  2. How is that different from just reading the Bible once in a while?

  3. Why do you think Paul says "richly" instead of just a little?

  4. How can we teach and encourage each other in our family?

  5. Why does singing show up in a verse about God's Word?

  6. What is one way we could make God's Word a focus this week?

  7. What is something from Scripture you can carry with you today?

Worship Together

Listen to Christ Be Magnified by Cory Asbury as a family this week. Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music & Amazon Music

As you worship, let the song become a prayer for your household. Ask God that Christ would be made greater in your home, in your conversations, and in the way your family lives this week.
