When Life Doesn't Make Sense | God Works All Things Together for Good
Every family eventually walks through something they never planned for.
A job ends unexpectedly. A diagnosis changes everything. A relationship breaks. A season stretches on far longer than you thought it would, and you find yourself asking the same question over and over: Why is this happening? In those moments, we don't need a quick explanation. We need a promise we can stand on.
Romans 8:28 gives us one:
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose."
Paul doesn't say that all things are good. He says that God works all things together for good. There is a significant difference between those two statements, and understanding it can change how your family walks through difficult seasons.
What This Promise Actually Says
Some things in life are simply not good. Loss is not good. Betrayal is not good. Sickness is not good. Scripture never asks us to pretend otherwise. What Romans 8:28 promises is that God is able to take even the hardest parts of our story and weave them into something purposeful.
Think about baking bread. Flour by itself is bland. Raw eggs are unpleasant. Yeast on its own is nothing you would want to taste. But in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, those individual ingredients become something good. God does that with our lives.
He does not waste your pain. He does not overlook your tears. He takes what the enemy meant for harm and He works it together for your good and for His glory.
For Those Who Love God
Paul includes an important phrase: "for those who love God." This promise belongs to people who have placed their trust in Him. It is not a guarantee that everything in life will work out however we want. It is an assurance that God is faithfully at work in the lives of those who belong to Him.
Loving God is more than a feeling. It shows up in how we live. We love God when we pray instead of panic. We love God when we obey Him even when it costs us something. We love God when we choose to worship in a season we do not understand. We love God when we keep bringing our children back to His Word, week after week, even when life is full. That kind of love does not depend on perfect circumstances. It depends on who He is.
Called According to His Purpose
Your family is not an accident. God has a purpose for you individually, and He has a purpose for your home. He placed you in this family, in this season, in this neighborhood, with these people around you.
That means the difficult chapter you are living right now is not outside of His plan. He can use it to build character in your children, deepen your dependence on Him, and prepare your family for something you cannot yet see.
Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before he ever saw why. Years later he told his brothers that what they meant for evil, God meant for good. He could not see it in the pit. He could not see it in the prison. But God was working the entire time.
God is working right now in your home too.
Trusting God With What You Can't Explain
Here is the honest truth: believing Romans 8:28 is easy after the difficult season is over. It is much harder in the middle of it.
So let your family practice trust before the answer comes.
Talk openly about what is hard. Pray about it together out loud. Remind one another of the times God has already come through for your family. Let your children see that faith is not the absence of questions but the decision to keep trusting God while you carry them.
You may not know how your situation will turn out. You can know who is working on your behalf.
God has not forgotten you. He is not confused by your circumstances. And He is still working all things together for your good.
